Lauren Underwood is a visual artist and art educator. Her artwork displays a unique blend of ideas that are both illusory and tangible; her paintings and drawings are portals to landscapes that are physical and spiritual. She works in casein, oil, and mixed media. Influenced by female artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe and Emily Carr, she is an artist enraptured by the adventure of a landscape and capturing its transitory details. Utilizing her experience studying abstract painting in New York City, she extends the representational space beyond the frame by featuring the continuous patterns of a place and her own subconscious. Lauren has explored landscapes in China, Chile, France, Italy, India, her home state of Oregon, and the desert Southwest of the USA. She now has two studios, one in her home in Salt Lake City, and one she built in the back of her van.
Underwood began her career as an art educator in New York City as an Americorps member, teaching art in an after school program at a middle school in Brooklyn. She was also a teaching artist for Wingspan Arts, and taught throughout the five boroughs of NYC. Currently, she is the arts facilitator for Youth City, a Salt Lake City after school program. She is dedicated to creating a learning environment that is immersive and adventurous. She facilitates activities to have just enough structure to be accessible and just enough space for youth to be explorers of materials and process. She holds a self designed BA titled Facilitating Creative Learning through Community from Fairhaven College at Western Washington University. She has also studied at the Art Students League of New York and the Drawing Studio in Portland, Oregon.
